Central Hall Musical Society

CHMS is the University of York’s leading musical theatre society. Alongside many one-off performances at local and uni events and the best, all-singing, all-dancing socials in York, they perform three-book musicals each year to the highest standard (their production of Chicago was nominated for a Love York Award for Best Event).

In addition, they perform three huge musical theatre showcases every year, all profits of which go to charity. Every auditionee is guaranteed a place in the cast so there are opportunities for everyone, whatever their age, stage, and experience!

The production teams for all their productions and showcases consist entirely of students, so there are plenty of opportunities on- and offstage every term of every year. They also host exciting workshops led by industry professionals (recently, they were joined by Layton Williams) and some amazing theatre trips! They run weekly dance fitness and tap classes and, on occasion, we have also taken student-written musicals to the Edinburgh Fringe.

Audition Information:

Auditions for their Flagship show 'Made In Dagenham' will take place in Week 2-3 of Autumn Term. These will happen alongside auditions for our Autumn showcase in which everyone is guaranteed a place! Keep an eye on all our social media for more audition information as we move closer to term time!

Rehearsal Information:

Their Flagship and Book musicals hold the biggest time requirement with up to 8-10 hours of rehearsals each week. Meanwhile, their showcases have around 3-4 hours of rehearsal time each week. Additionally, we hold weekly fitness and tap classes every Tuesday evening in the Dixon. These classes are free to all of their members.
